He has exhibited with several leading societies including New English Art Club, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Pastel Society and of course the RBA, where he was elected a member in 2006. In 2011 the National Portrait Gallery included Baldwin's Here No Evil oil on board in their book titled '500 Portraits - BP Portrait Awards'. He was invited by National Portrait Gallery to participate in their Mystery Postcard in 2006,2014 and 2017.

Martyn has always been interested in the human form and this has developed into an interest in form in general. He enjoys taking a central motif; a person, animal, still life or an element in a landscape and working it over and over again until the desired sensation is achieved. This process best lends itself to the media of oil paint and charcoal and is akin to a sculptor modelling in clay, adding and subtracting masses as required. In his own words: "My work is the result of a synthesis of artist, motif and materials through a profound study of the structure of the subject in order to find the spirit in the mass."
