NEXT EXHIBITION

NEW RECRUITS... - SAT FEB 4TH - SAT FEB 25TH

Saffron Gallery's first exhibition of 2012 is an annual showcase of some of its new artists for the year ahead. This year the line up is better than ever and includes three talented, award-winning painters and one exceptionally accomplished and rather famous sculptor.

Claire Wiltsher is an award winning painter whose work was recently acquired by the House of Lords to be exhibited as part of their permanent collection. Claire's MA is in fine art, with a BA (Hons) in fine art painting. Her oil and mixed media landscapes combine layers of paint with fragments of collage. She scratches through sections of the painting to allow colours from underneath to emerge. "I want to create evocative paintings of land and sea that show a sense of place - different weather conditions are key elements". Claire uses brushes and different sized palette knives to build up layers and create depth. Paint is also flicked or carefully thrown on selected areas, evidence of which can be found all over her studio floor!

Another award-winning artist, Susan Evans, regularly shows throughout the UK, Europe and the US and has enjoyed solo shows in London, Bath and Brighton. Susan is collected privately and publicly, by institutions including Exeter College, Oxford and the Peterborough Museum. She creates powerful skyscapes on canvas, constantly blending to give a soft, blurry effect. She often works quickly, sometimes using cloths to make the paint as thin as possible. She then builds up a canvas with slightly thicker paint, sometimes using a small amount of palette knife work. Fascinated by horizons and the mystery of distance, skies and cloud patterns have been her main inspiration while influences include Constable, Rothko and Turner.

Acclaimed Scottish artist Colin Brown enjoys a strong international career with regular exhibitions throughout the UK, Europe and America. His paintings have received a number of awards, most notably a major artist's grant from The Pollock-Krasner Foundation of New York in 1996. In his current work Brown pulls together random elements and fragments into closely controlled compositions. The paintings run a fine line between impulse and calculation, continuously shift context and meaning rather than attempting to realise a predetermined concept. He follows a specific process which allows the painting to emerge through its implementation.

Lastly, yet most notably, award-winning sculptor Guy Portelli VPRBA FRBS joins Saffron's ranks bringing with him a selection of his famous Pop Icons series of sculptures. Guy, Vice President of the Royal Society of British Artists, shot to fame when his pitch on Dragons Den so impressed the dragons that three of them invested in his Pop Icons collection and launched his major solo exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. Major commissioned sculptures are exhibited at The Commonwealth Institute in Kensington, at Covent Garden, Piccadilly Circus, and Spitalfields in London, The Trafford Centre in Manchester and private commissions include his "Peace & Love" sculpture for Ringo Starr. Guy is currently working with Jeff Beck to create a new addition to the Pop Icon series.

The exhibition runs from Saturday 4th February to Saturday 25th February. Please phone if you would like more information or check www.facebook.com/SaffronGallery ocassionally for updates.

META-Human by Louise Giblin - from London to Battle
8th-22nd October

Originally launched in London earlier this year, META-Human now travels to Saffron. The entire META-Human collection will be exhibited, and excitingly, new sculptures in the series will be unveiled for the first time in public. Louise will supplement her sculpture collection with a selection of her intricately detailed pen drawings. Now considered one of the world's leading bodycast sculptors, Louise's work has doubled in value in the past three years and with the coming launch of her Olympian series of sculptures, her work is proving not just highly desirable, but highly investable.

Louise's sculptures are produced in ceramic then cast in bronze, translucent resin or cold cast metals. Her subject matter is portraiture and the human form, often involving detailed, overlapping, fragmented or abstracted imagery. She develops ideas from observation sketches, digital imagery and written works.

Advance info - the Olympian series of sculptures includes world champion gymnast Beth Tweddle, Dame Kelly Holmes, Sally Gunnell OBE, Kriss Akabussi MBE and paralympian Darren Leach and will be launched in May 2012 at Louise's solo exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. Prior to this, Saffron will exclusively unveil the completed Kriss Akabussi sculpture at the Edinburgh Art Fair this November and the entire Olympian series will be exhibited at Saffron in 2012.

CON CREMIN SOLO SHOW - Horizon Lines No 3

Irish artist Con Cremin presents 28 new detailed and textured landscapes. Cremin has exhibited throughout Ireland, at several shows in Belfast, in Turkey and in London. His show at Saffron marks his first exhibition in the UK in a solo capacity and launches his Horizon Lines No 3 series of paintings, the 3rd based on Cremin's interpretation of the horizon. A personal impression rather than a specific landscape or location, the majority of these paintings are directly influenced by scenery and Cremin's bus journeys through the Irish countryside.

INSIDE OUT

To mark Battle Arts' 'The World Turned Upside Down', Saffron hosts a sister exhibition 'Inside Out' where the theme will be freely interpreted by sculptors and printmakers including Svetlana K-Lie, Louise Giblin, Cathryn Kemp and Tor Hildyard. K-Lie, a former Best Young Sculptor of Russia and Best Female Sculptor of Russia, will unveil her latest bronze sculpture titled Cheburashka, an adaptation of her Broomhill Sculpture Prize shortlisted sculpture. Giblin, currently casting her Olympians series of sculptures including British greats Dame Kelly Homes and Kris Akabussi MBE, exhibits a number of her recent sculptures. Both sculptors will exhibit a selection of prints and drawings. Cathryn Kemp explores narratives around female identity and rites of passage in her textiles and printmaking. She is concerned with fragility, femininity and the emotional lineage of garments and distinguished by her use of vintage textiles; sometimes hand stitching diary entries and poetry into her works. Tor Hildyard exhibits both nationally and internationally including Cow Parade - a public arts event that took place throughout London - painting the cow for the Ritz Hotel, and ''Essential British Kit' cow for Hacketts. Tor's work was also exhibited at 2011 Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy.

SUMMER EXHIBITION - NOW ON

Our summer exhibition has just started and it's a stonker! Our resident artists are on show throughout the summer in an ever changing exhibition. Our 'Spotlight On...' micro-shows within the exhibition will focus on individual artists in turn, starting now with the divine Dion Salvador Lloyd who has also been selected to exhibit at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2011. No mean feat either, there were far fewer non RA members selected than usual.

Details of our micro-shows and snapshots of the exhibition as a whole will be posted periodically on our Facebook page - www.facebook.com/SaffronGallery - 'Like' us to keep up to date. The line up of artists is rather impressive if we say so ourselves and balances national and international award winning artists with local and regional artists. More below about some of the participating artists.....

Helen Masacz - winner of The Arts Club Award at the 2011 Royal Society of Portrait Painters' annual exhibition for her portrait of London Mayor Boris Johnson - will exhibit her new still life oils. Already renowned for her strikingly beautiful portraits, Helen's new work has been very keenly awaited.
Following her immensely successful solo show in London in May, Jessica Zoob exhibits a number of her recent paintings. Jessica's work has been described as 'modern impressionist' & she's fast becoming a major player on the UK art scene.

Multi award-winning Russian artist Svetlana K-Lie, currently shortlisted for the Broomhill Sculpture Prize 2011, exhibits her new prints & sculpture. Svetlana's work has been purchased by the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg & she won Best Woman Sculptor of Russia 2004 & Best Young Sculptor of Russia 2005.
Louise Giblin ARBS, trained by Antony Gormley, Peter Randall-Page & Edward Allington, produces meticulously researched & detailed sculptures & is another of Saffron's rising stars. Louise will exhibit her sculptures & intricate drawings inspired by her travels.

Dani Humberstone combines strongly lit still life oils with an element of abstraction. This unique twist ensured Dani quickly became one of Saffron's best received new artists earlier in 2011. Also selected to exhibit at this year's Society of Women Artists annual exhibition, to date Dani has published two books with Search Press - 'How to Paint Abstract' and 'Abstracts in Acrylic'.
Paul Bennett is a young artist who recently turned professional. His powerful seascapes are already extremely popular both nationally & internationally and he's proving a name to watch for the future. The exhibition will also feature his abstract paintings for the first time.

Cathryn Kemp is an international award-winning artist whose recent work is strongly influenced by a move to the coast & by Sea Poem by TS Elliot prize winning poet Alice Oswald. Cathryn's very latest paintings are a development on her recent mixed media paintings.
Finally, Con Cremin flies the flag for Irish artists with his skilfully executed paintings. Con's beautifully interpreted & detailed landscapes are widely exhibited throughout Ireland & Saffron is delighted to introduce his work to the UK. These artists & many more gallery favourites including Richard Swann, Chrissy Guest, Ros Perton & Adriana Brinsmead-Stockham will take part in the exhibition at scheduled intervals throughout the season.

Saffron's Summer Exhibition is on now and runs through to Saturday September 3rd.
